The innovative “Embrace Initiative” at Plaza Botero in Medellín has led to a remarkable 97% reduction in personal thefts, significantly improving safety and revitalizing the local economy. Eleven months since its implementation, the initiative has not only enhanced security but also boosted the economy for local businesses and increased tourist visits, making it one of Medellín’s most attractive and iconic locations.
Mauricio Valencia, Secretary of Economic Development in Medellín, highlighted the strategy’s impact, noting an influx of restaurateurs in the area, indicating a vibrant economic dynamic. The plaza now sees around 35,000 visitors, including both locals and tourists, with a new tourist information point providing guidance and information.
Originally planned as a three-month project, the initiative’s success led to its extension throughout the year. Notable achievements include a 97% reduction in personal theft, 91% reduction in cellphone thefts, and a 100% reduction in homicides.
