A story of animal rescue unfolded in Medellín this Saturday when a video of a capuchin monkey wandering around the Caribe Metro station went viral on social media. Concerned citizens sprang into action, safely capturing the lost primate and placing it in the care of authorities.
The Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá confirmed that the monkey was indeed a capuchin species, presumed to have been the victim of illegal wildlife trafficking and had escaped its captors.
“This primate is not naturally found in our metropolitan area,” the entity explained.
The capuchin monkey is now under the expert care of professionals at the Centro de Atención y Valoración de Fauna Silvestre del Área Metropolitana del Valle de Aburrá, where it will undergo a thorough evaluation and rehabilitation process.
“Their natural habitat is the humid forest, specifically the Pacific coast region and the western Andes mountain range. In Antioquia, they are primarily found in the Urabá region,” the Área Metropolitana added.
The entity reminds the public that the wildlife emergency hotline, 3046300090, is available to report similar incidents.
