The 18th edition of the Fiesta del Libro y la Cultura is set to transform Medellín’s Jardín Botánico and the northern areas of the city into a vibrant literary hub from September 6-15. With the theme “Un latido común” (A Common Heartbeat), this year’s festival aims to double the number of new title launches and highlight the importance of reading and cultural exchange.
The event, one of Colombia’s most significant literary gatherings, will feature an array of attractions, including a Salon for Independent Publishers and dedicated spaces for children’s and youth literature, self-published works, academic books, new readings, comics, and illustrations—celebrating 100 years of comic and illustration culture in Colombia.
This year’s spotlight will shine on iconic characters Peter Pan and Wendy, enchanting attendees with themed decorations and activities. The festival will also feature a special edition of “One Thousand and One Nights” to reward participants in various planned activities.
A highlight of this edition is the strong focus on independent publishers and emerging authors, reflecting Medellín’s commitment to expanding its cultural offerings both locally and internationally. “We aim to enhance the Fiesta del Libro as a decision of Medellín’s Mayor’s Office and all the cultural entities of the District. It’s about making the festival more open, more international, and more professional,” said a spokesperson for the event.
The festival will kick off with the 18th Popular Book Days from May 24-26 in the Carlos E. Restrepo neighborhood and the vicinity of the Public Library Pilot, under the theme “The neighborhood, a universe.” This will be followed by the 16th Youth Reading Parade from July 27-28, which includes activities like a literary camp and a comics and illustration exhibition.
