Early on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, a Metrocable cabin in Medellín’s Line K system suffered a critical failure, resulting in the cabin detaching and falling near the Popular station at approximately 4:30 AM, causing injuries to at least nine passengers. Promptly responding to the accident, Metro de Medellín suspended service on Line K, affecting the route from Acevedo to Santo Domingo, to allow emergency crews to handle the crisis and conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
The site quickly became the focus of emergency operations, with Metro manager Tomás Elejalde and local emergency services, including firefighters, arriving early to coordinate efforts. Medellín Mayor Federico ‘Fico’ Gutiérrez confirmed the incident via his X account, stating that the injured were immediately transported to various medical facilities for treatment. He assured the public that while Line K was out of service, the rest of the city’s transportation system continued to operate normally.
The cause of the cabin’s detachment is under investigation as the city works to ensure the safety of its transportation infrastructure and prevent similar incidents in the future.
