The Environmental Secretary in Medellín has launched an initiative in Villanueva to clean 14 underpasses, a proactive measure to prevent flooding and emergencies in the city’s public spaces.
This marks the second major cleanup in Medellín this year focusing on the lower parts of bridges that are prone to blockages due to intense rainfall, often affecting mobility. Additionally, throughout the year, mechanical sweepers perform daily cleaning of the roads in the underpasses to prevent sewer obstruction.
“With the interventions we carry out with the cleaning and beautification team on the main corridors and underpasses, we aim to clean, maintain, and repair the drains, sewers, and fix the lighting in these areas, to ensure proper drainage and prevent floods and unfortunate consequences during rainy periods. We will continue these tasks, but we call on citizens to manage their waste properly to avoid regrettable emergencies,” stated the Medellin Deputy Secretary of Environmental Management, Luis Eduardo Cuervo Tafur.
The cleanup and maintenance are performed between 9:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. to avoid disrupting traffic during peak hours. The process includes washing hard areas and cleaning drains to mitigate the risk of flooding during the rainy season.
The work began in Villanueva and will continue, in order, in La Alpujarra, Los Músicos, Bulerías, Aguacatala, San Juan with the 80, Policía Antioquia, Punto Cero, Aguacatala, lower transversal, street 10 with El Poblado avenue, Parques del Río, Feria de Ganado, and Terminal del Norte.
