Medellín has achieved a significant milestone with the lowest unemployment rate among Colombia’s major cities, reporting a rate of 8.9% for the March-May quarter, down from 10.4% in the same period last year—a reduction of 1.5 percentage points. This improvement translates to approximately 46,000 more people employed compared to the previous year.
The city’s success in reducing unemployment underscores its robust economic strategies and support for entrepreneurs, as emphasized by Mayor Federico Gutiérrez Zuluaga. Out of Medellín’s 2.2 million working-age population, 1.431 million are now employed, reflecting sustained growth supported by local government initiatives aimed at enhancing employment opportunities in collaboration with the private sector.
