Starting January 1, 2024, the Valle de Aburrá region will see an increase in public transport fares, affecting buses, Metro, tram, and Metroplús services. The decision, approved by the Metropolitan Area Board comprising the mayors of the ten municipalities in Valle de Aburrá, reflects adjustments based on the projected Consumer Price Index (IPC) for 2023.
Regular users of the Mass Transit System (Metro, tram, cable, and Metroplús) will experience a fare increase of COP$330 per journey. Currently, a standard trip on the Medellín Metro costs COP$2,880, which will rise to COP$3,210 in 2024. The cost for a single-journey ticket will be COP$3,650.The fare hike is determined by a technical study of transportation costs, including fuel prices, wages, capital recovery, and vehicle maintenance. Of the COP$330 increase, COP$30 will support the Metroplús System Fare Stabilization Fund, and COP$20 will be allocated for contingencies in the Medellín Metro’s rail line.
