The completion of the Metroplús corridor in Envigado is currently on hold due to a pending payment of $894 million from the municipal administration. This final stretch of 125 meters will connect the existing Pecositas and Palogrande stations, completing the 3.8 km route.
Since September 2023, when a 315-meter section was delivered, the project has remained incomplete despite its proximity to completion. Former Mayor Braulio Espinosa expressed hope that construction would begin by the end of his term or the start of the following administration. However, progress has stalled, with Metroplús Infrastructure Directorate attributing the delay to the outstanding payment.
The National Government suspended funding for the final section due to Envigado’s failure to reimburse $894 million in ineligible expenses. Once this payment is settled, the Ministry of Transport’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Unit will greenlight the contracting process.
The construction will be divided into two phases to minimize disruption, with one lane being worked on at a time. The timing of the project remains uncertain, but Orozco stated that they are considering factors such as school vacations to minimize the impact on traffic.
While the final section of the Envigado Metroplús corridor awaits funding, progress is being made on future phases. Two months ago, contracts were awarded for the design and auditing of Metroplús stations in Medellín, Envigado, and Itagüí, totaling $2.3 billion. The construction of the stations will be the responsibility of the municipalities, with Envigado planning six stations.
