In a recent gathering to further the development of the “Por Antioquia Firme” 2024-2027 Plan, Governor Andrés Julián Rendón announced significant plans for the expansion of the Medellin Metro system into the Metropolitan Area, promising to enhance connectivity across the 10 municipalities of this sub-region.
“We are ready to invest in the Metro to make it accessible for the entire Valle de Aburrá,” declared Governor Rendón during the event. He emphasized the importance of this investment in improving the quality of life for the region’s inhabitants.
The initiative includes the modernization of the current train fleet and a financial collaboration that will utilize part of the department’s borrowing capacity. This move aims to alleviate the financial burden that has historically been shouldered solely by the district of Medellín in terms of funding for the mass transit system.
Details on the timeline for the Medellin Metro expansion and specifics regarding the modernization of the trains are expected to be released in the coming months. This ambitious project marks a significant milestone in Antioquia’s journey towards creating a more integrated and sustainable metropolitan area.
