The body of Peter Paul Jankus, 38, from Chicago, an American citizen, was discovered in a high-end residential complex in El Poblado’s Los Naranjos neighborhood after a strong odor alerted neighbors. Jankus had been missing for 17 days, and his family and friends feared he had returned to the United States unexpectedly.
The discovery was made around noon on Monday at Calle 5 Sur and Carrera 32 in the Los Naranjos neighborhood, commune 14 (El Poblado), in the southeastern part of Medellín. Neighbors complained about the smell, and Metropolitan Police officers decided to open the property.
Jankus was found deceased and in an advanced state of decomposition. The cause of death could not be determined due to the decomposition, and Legal Medicine will conduct forensic studies to determine whether it was natural causes or other circumstances.
According to those who knew him, Jankus had been missing since April 5th, but no missing person report was filed at the time. It is understood that he owned the apartment where he had been living for the past six months.
Jankus’s death brings the number of non-migrants who have died in various circumstances this year in the Aburrá Valley to 17, 16 in Medellín and one in Barbosa. Of these, only one has been confirmed as a homicide, three are under investigation, and four have been classified as suicides.
